Called “fearless” and “intense” by the Baltimore Sun, the “magnificent” soprano Alyssa Bowlby “acted as impressively as she sang,” according to a Houston Press review of her Musetta in La Boheme for Opera in the Heights in Houston, TX, where she “distinguished Musetta with her bright, clean singing and vivacious characterization,” according to the Houston Chronicle.
After Musetta, she has been invited to re-appear with Opera in the Heights again five times - in October/November 2010 as Adele in Die Fledermaus, in October/November 2011 as Despina in Così fan tutte, in November 2012 as Konstanze in Abduction from the Seraglio, in March 2013 as Amina in La Sonnambula, and again in 2013 as Violetta in La Traviata.
In New York, she concertizes frequently with Mimesis Ensemble, and will appear with them three times in April/May 2010 performing Fairouz and Saariaho. She will then appear with pianist John Chernoff in recital at Humboldt State University on May 13, 2010 performing the first of a five-recital series experiment in accessibility. On June 3, she will return briefly to Opera in the Heights for Bravissimo!, a gala event. She was also asked to appear with Empire Opera as Abigail Williams in The Crucible in October 2010.
2009 included the North American premiere of a Tobias Picker song cycle along with seven major opera roles: In September, she sang the American premiere of the Tobias Picker song cycle The Rain in the Trees with the Mimesis Ensemble along with a chamber work of Mohammed Fairouz.
In November 2009, she performed the role of Serafina in Il Campanello with Garden State Opera. During August, she finished the reprise of Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte. A few weeks later, she sang Musetta with two different small area companies in preparation for her 2010 performance with Opera in the Heights. In July 2009, she appeared as Clorinda in La Cenerentola with Capitol Heights Lyric Opera. A week before, she appeared with a second small opera company as Oscar in Un Ballo in Maschera (in Italian), which she also performed in June with Brooklyn Repertory Opera (in English). In March and April 2009, she relocated to Houston, Texas, where she performed the role of Nannetta with Opera in the Heights (Houston, TX)’s production of Falstaff.
She made her Weill Hall debut singing excerpts from Massenet’s Manon in the title role. In April 2007, she was heard singing and being interviewed by Robert Smith on NPR’s All Things Considered.
Previously, she has appeared as Frasquita in Carmen with Ardamore Chamber Opera, as Marzelline in Empire Opera's production of Fidelio, as Mme. Herz in Garden State Opera's production of Mozart's The Impresario, as Queen of the Night in Project Opera of Manhattan's production of The Magic Flute, and as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte with Brooklyn Repertory Opera. She has also performed roles including Geraldine (A Hand of Bridge), Blonde (Abduction from the Seraglio), Miss Wordsworth (Albert Herring), and Miss Pinkerton (The Old Maid and the Thief). In concert, she has appeared as the soprano soloist in Les Noces, Barber's Knoxville: Summer of 1915, Carmina Burana, Messiah, the Mozart Requiem, the Bach Magnificat, and Mendelssohn's Lobgesang.
She holds a BA from Haverford College (Magna cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, Departmental High Honors) and an MM from the Peabody Conservatory of Music (Pi Kappa Lambda), where she studied with renowned American soprano Phyllis Bryn-Julson. She spent a summer at Aspen Music Festival under the tutelage of Susanne Mentzer. She currently studies voice with Valentin Peytchinov and coaches drama with Peggy Lewis.
